Do you Dare Visit the Scariest Cemetery in Europe?

Today I spent a very pleasant day walking through the grounds of Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital. It’s an amazing place, and you can read more about it here. However, there was another reason why I chose to make the trip to Bohnice today.

I had heard rumours that Bohnice is also home to one of Prague’s best kept secrets. The old cemetery is now disused, but it once belonged to the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital. It was here, that those who met their ends as residents of the hospital found their final resting place. Many of these people ended up committing suicide.

However, the cemetery is also home to soldiers who fought during WW1 and 1 man who was suspected of murder. There is something rather moving and poignant about the place today. It has not been used for half a century and the vast majority of tombs and gravestones are completely shrouded by ivy, which almost covers the floor.

This cemetery has long attracted the attention of those who are interested in the supernatural. Unpredictable fluctuations in temperature and inexplicably high levels of electromagnetic energy have been recorded here. People have reported seeing strange lights and hearing unusual noises whilst walking through the cemetery at night. It was once even a popular location for satanic rituals. As a result, the cemetery has been called the “scariest in Europe”.

I certainly wasn’t feeling brave enough to walk around the cemetery by night, but I was sufficiently intrigued to pay a visit during the daylight hours. It was a little tricky to find, but I eventually spotted the large rusty gates which led into the cemetery. It was a quiet, pretty and poignant place. Only a couple of the gravestones were still legible but the floor was covered in rather telling mounds of ivy. I didn’t detect a hint of supernatural activity but the place was nonetheless, slightly unsettling.

If you are interested in visiting the cemetery (by day or night), you should first take the Metro to Kobylisy (C Line). From here you can take either the 177 or 200 bus to the stop Odra. The cemetery is around a 20-minute walk from here (cemetery location on Google Maps). I would also thoroughly recommend visiting the extensive grounds of the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital whilst you are in the area.
