Bockem is a newly opened restaurant located at Prague 5 few steps from Naplavka and Novy Smichov shopping center. As of now, the restaurant is offering only breakfast but not the typical flat white + eggs benedict. This is a different, next level breakfast you won’t have anywhere else in Prague. Think of Bistro Milada but for breakfasts only.
The small reference in its name to Vnitroblock is not a coincidence. Bockem’s chef Ondrej Kyncl is also a chef at Kavarna co hleda jmeno, and he and Vnitroblock owners put together the concept of Bockem.
When you walk in the place you will understand this is something different. Not the common hipster-style bistro. The interior is simple yet decent and almost baroque. There are only about 20 seats inside, small bar with coffee and lemonades. The main kitchen is in the back.
The menu consists of three courses – the starter, main course, and the dessert. As a complimentary drink, you can have either black tea, filtered coffee, or homemade lemonade (raspberry, elderberry, currant). All this for 320 CZK which is a great price considering the quality and amount of work put into each dish. Possibly it’s also an introductory price which will go up soon.
The first dish was a starter. Salmon (smoked?) with crispy asparagus, grilled avocado, and avocado paste. As the main course, we have tried egg benedict souffle and croque monsieur. And both were absolutely amazing. Especially the fluffy egg benedict is a piece of art. As a dessert, we have tried both grits (krupicova kase in Czech) and strawberries with cream. And have to say the krupicova kase was the better one, really smooth and satisfying end of the journey.
Overall, we really enjoyed the long breakfast/brunch and definitely will be coming back. Based on my experience, this is one of the best breakfasts you can get in Prague. Hope the menu will be updated on a monthly basis with the signature dishes (i.e. egg benedict souffle and krupicova kase) staying.
And two practical tips. Given the limited amount of seats, make sure to do the reservation upfront. Also, keep in mind this isn’t a fast-service bistro rather a fine-dining restaurant, so reserve around 60 to 90 minutes to enjoy the experience. Although the kitchen could be a little faster, hopefully, that will get better in time (hence we also giving 3.5/5 for a service).
