Using Taxi in Prague

Michal B.

Getting a taxi in Prague is really easy, as there are many of them and most of the local drivers speak or understand basic English.

However, some of them may try to overcharge you, especially if you hail a cab on the street. In fact, there has been a whole video series about taxi drivers in Prague. But we have some great tips for you on how to get a good, safe, and cheap taxi ride in Prague.

Average Price and Fares

In general, taxis in Prague are cheap compared to other popular cities in Europe. The rates for taxi rides in Prague are calculated using the fare per one kilometer + entry fee and are standardized by the city:

  • Average fare per one kilometer is 36 CZK (€1.40)
  • Standard entry fee is 60 CZK (€2.40)

So, for example, the 17-kilometer taxi ride from Vaclav Havel Airport to downtown (Wenceslas Square) will cost around 700 CZK (€28).

Recommended Taxi Apps and Providers

Welcome Pickups

Welcome Pickups are not a typical taxi company as they are focusing only on the airport and city-to-city transfers (i.e. Cesky Krumlov). But they should be your first choice when landing/leaving Prague.

The private ride from the airport to your hotel will cost you €33 which is about the same price you would pay for a regular taxi. All benefits over a regular taxi or even Uber are in the table below.

Uber Airport
Regular Taxi
Land and go (no waiting time)
Professional driver with excellent English
Personal meet and greet at the arrival gate
Mini tour of the local landmarks

Uber

Uber operates in Prague and is a popular choice among both tourists and locals thanks to its convenience, transparency, and fair pricing. The app works just like it does in other cities—simply enter your destination, confirm your pickup point, and a nearby driver will take you where you need to go.

Uber Airport operates as an official Prague airport taxi service.

It’s especially useful for travelers unfamiliar with local taxi services or those who want to avoid potential overcharging. You can see the fare estimate upfront, track your driver in real time, and pay directly through the app using a card or digital wallet.

There are six different Uber levels available in Prague:

  • UberX: The basic level of Uber services for affordable price.
  • Uber Pet: Same as X, but allows you to ride with your pet.
  • Uber Comfort: New cars with extra legroom space.
  • UberXL: Affordable rised for groups up to 6 people.
  • Uber Black: High-end luxurious cars with top-rated drivers.
  • Uber Airport: Same as Black, but operates only to/from the airport.

Each service is priced differently, but generally speaking using UberX is completely fine and approx. 40% cheaper compared to regular taxis.

Liftago Taxi

Liftago is a local but the price is set by each driver. So you simply enter locations for pick-up and destination, and then you can select from a list of drivers based on price rating.

Liftago is a great local alternative to Uber.

Generally, the prices vary from 24 CZK (€1.00) per kilometer up to 36 CZK (€1.40) per kilometer, but you always view the price upfront. The Liftago app is also fully compatible with your mobile payment, so you don’t need any cash at all.

Another advantages compared to other companies is the website or phone reservation (+420 222 111 000), possibility to order car with a child seat, order a minibus for up to 7 people, or order a car pickup (i.e., a driver for your own car).

Modry Andel Taxi

Modry Andel (Blue Angel in English) is a solid Prague-based taxi company. They mostly use new Skoda Superb or Skoda Octavia cars, so the ride is pretty smooth and safe. Using their app you can book a cab to your location and also set up the destination.

The price per kilometer is approximatelly 32 CZK for regular class. The entry fee for each ride is the standard 40 CZK. Alternatively, you can select a business class which costs 38 CZK per kilometer and guarantees a Skoda Superb with a driver in suite.

Same as with Liftago, you can book via app, online, phone (+420 737 222 333), or even e-mail (online@modryandel.cz). What we really like is the LadyRide service for ladies provided by lady drivers.

It's one of the few taxi companies which can also take a group of up to 8 people in their Hyundai Staria minubus.

Conclusion: Use Reliable Taxi Services

Overall, taxi services in Prague work very well. There is a regulated maximum fare of 36 CZK per kilometer that all companies must follow. We recommend using trustworthy providers like Liftago or Modry Andel, which operate a large fleet of vehicles with reliable drivers. It's best to avoid hailing taxis directly from the street.

For more affordable rides, UberX and Bolt offer excellent value for money. While Prague was once “famous” for shady taxi drivers, those days are largely behind us. Additionally, several traditional taxi companies—such as Tick Tack, City Taxi, and Svez.se—have ceased operations in recent years. Very likely due to the global competition.

5 Honest Tips for a Safe Taxi Ride

  1. Use Trusted Apps or Companies: Always book your ride through reputable services like Liftago, Modrý Anděl, Bolt, or Uber. These platforms ensure transparent pricing, driver ratings, and safer experiences.
  2. Avoid Hailing Taxis on the Street: While you can hail a taxi, it’s not recommended—especially near tourist hotspots—due to the risk of overcharging. Stick to taxi stands or app-based bookings.
  3. Check the Meter and Fare Rates: Official taxis must use a meter and display pricing on the vehicle. The maximum legal fare is 36 CZK per km, so if the meter seems suspicious, don’t hesitate to end the ride.
  4. Confirm Payment Options: Most taxis accept card payments, but it’s wise to double-check before the ride begins. With apps, you can pay easily via card or mobile wallet.
  5. Avoid Foreign Currency Payments: Always pay in Czech crowns (CZK). Some drivers may accept euros, but the exchange rate is often unfavorable and may lead to overpayment.
