Holesovice District in Prague 7

Rosie A.

Holesovice is nestled into the meander of the Vltava River and boasts amongst many other attractions: 2 of the city’s best parks, arguably the most famous and iconic art installation in the city, countless superb restaurants offering a range of cuisines from all around the world, a cinema unlike any other, some of the city’s finest modern art galleries and several night clubs, each offering a unique and exciting night out in the city.

Most importantly, you will find a distinctly more “Czech” feel as you walk the streets. This is a district where ordinary Czechs live, eat and go out with their families.

Holesovice is easily accessible from the city center:

  • Metro: Line C (red), stop at Nadrazi Holesovice or Vltavska.
  • Tram: Lines 6, 12, 17, and 24 connect Holesovice to the rest of Prague.
  • Train: Prague Holesovice railway station offers regional and international connections.

The Parks

Letna Park is perched on a hill overlooking the Vltava River, just a short walk from the city center. You can take the tram 17 or 5 to the Cechuv Most tram stop and from here walk up the stone steps to the Metronome (trust me, it will be worth the effort!).

The view of the Stalin Metronome at the top of Letna Hill.

This giant, functional metronome looks out over the city and was built on the plinth where once stood an enormous statue of the former Soviet leader Josef Stalin. Although it’s hill top location makes it visible from various parts of the city, to see it up close is a very worth-while and ever so slightly eerie experience.

You can also take in some breath taking views of the city. From the metronome you can take a relaxing stroll through the rest of the park. Here you will find kiosks selling refreshments all year round, the famous Letna Beer Garden and no shortage of spectacular spots to stop and look out over Prague.

A little off the beaten track but also well worth a visit for those nature lovers willing to brave the cold is Stromovka Park. If you take either tram 6 or 17 to Vystaviste Holesovice, you will immediately see the expanse of trees which is by far the largest of Prague’s parks.

Stromovka Park.

It was founded in the 13th century as a royal game reserve but these days it has the feel of a large English country garden. Even in the winter it is popular with runners, dog walkers and those simply seeking a relaxing afternoon.

There are several children’s playgrounds, large duck ponds and a couple of café’s serving a range of hot and cold drinks and snacks. There is even a planetarium! If you’re feeling adventurous you can follow a footpath as far as the Troja Chateau and Prague Zoo on the other side of the river.

A fantastic new addition to Holesovice is Park U Vody, a three-hectare riverside park now open along the Vltava. This inviting green space features picnic areas, plenty of seating, river access points for swimming, a communal fire pit, workout equipment, and a network of walking paths—including a barefoot trail for a natural foot massage. The park’s landscape blends natural vegetation with new orchard-style plantings and a large open lawn, creating a relaxing spot for leisure, sports, or community gatherings.
