Vitkov, the hill crowned by the giant National Memorial and Jan Zizka’s statue, has just received a fresh new look. After two years of work, the revitalization is finally complete – and it’s well worth a visit on your next walk through Prague.
Instead of an empty parking lot, you’ll now find a leafy square with 30 newly planted trees, mainly hardy varieties that can handle Prague’s hot summers. The biggest draw, though, is the new promenade with a fountain, a geyser and more than 200 playful water jets, running from May to September. They spring to life four times every hour and are designed to recycle water and make use of rainfall.
Visitors will also welcome the brand-new bistro with public restrooms – something Vitkov had been missing for years. The building blends into the hillside with a green roof and creates a shaded amphitheatre where you can sit down and enjoy a break. Whether the bistro will stay open all year or just seasonally will depend on the future operator.
On top of that, paths and stairways around the park have been restored. In the future, new steps on the northern side should even connect Vitkov directly with Karlin, making it easier to explore both districts in one walk.
So if you’re looking for a mix of history, views, and a fresh place to relax, Vitkov Park is now more inviting than ever.
