Prague has long awaited a direct rail link to its international airport. Now it’s finally becoming reality. The underground train station at Vaclav Havel Airport has received official approval, with construction set to begin in 2027 and completion planned for 2030.

A long-delayed connection

For decades, Prague debated how to best connect the city center with the airport. While metro expansion was once considered, the government ultimately chose the railway option. Trains will depart from the reconstructed Masaryk station, pass through the new Bubny hub, and continue via Dejvice, Veleslavin, Liboc, and Ruzyne before reaching the airport.

First underground railway station in the Czech Republic

“This will be the first underground railway station on the Czech network. Two tracks and a central platform will provide passengers with direct access to both terminals,” said Jiří Svoboda, head of Sprava zeleznic, on social media.

The project will be built as a public-private partnership (PPP). Total costs are estimated at around 6.5 billion CZK.

Once completed, the train connection is expected to significantly reduce travel time from the city center to the airport, making Prague more accessible for millions of travelers each year.
