The Czech Republic’s capital is even greener, thanks to a new park which has been constructed in the Castle District Hradčany. It was created in place of a land coffer dam, which was dug during the construction of the new tunnel complex Blanka. The new park is not finished completely, yet nevertheless its first part has already been opened to the public. It covers around 10 thousand square metres of land and consists of large greensward areas with almost one hundred newly planted trees. This year, one of Prague’s most beautiful sights, the observatory on top of the romantic Petřín Hill, will celebrate the 125th anniversary of its foundation. The Petřín Observatory was built during just a few months in 1891. The observatory was inspired by the famous Parisian Eiffel Tower, which members of the Czech Tourist Club saw during their visit of The Universal Exposition of 1889. A rather ambitious idea of Prague 5 representatives has caused some controversy. The opposition has criticized the councilmen’s proposal to build a 60 metre high Ferris Wheel in the Smíchov quarter. The aim of the project, called “Prague Wheel”, is to make the Smíchov embankment more attractive to visitors. If the project is approved by the care of the historical monuments department and other deciding institutions, the Ferris Wheel will be built in 2017 on the “Hořejší nábřeží” embankment, close to the rail bridge across the Vltava river. Prague Zoo has yet another new member. After the recent birth of the elephant calf, a baby gorilla has just been born. And it was to the garden staff’s great amazement, since it was totally unexpected… The gorilla baby was born on the 23rd of April. When visiting Prague, you might soon be travelling to “Czechia”. The new international name suggested for the Czech Republic has brought plenty of controversy. The government coalition of the Czech Republic is dealing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ proposal of a new English translation of the country’s name. Prague’s Planetarium is preparing a new attraction for its visitors. From the 12th of April, there will be an exact replica of the Vostok spaceship lander set up in the foyer, as a reminder of the first human space flight.
